In the vibrant heart of Ottawa, Hack the Hill stands as a unique amalgamation of various entities — a close-knit community, a club, a student organization, a nonprofit, and a corporation. This blend not only makes us distinct but also fortifies our mission to provide a platform for technological education, innovation, and professional development. From Inspiration to Realization
Hack the Hill’s journey began in 2022 when organizers saw an opportunity to do things differently in the hackathon scene at the University of Ottawa. Inspired by the success of a large-scale Web3 hackathon organized by the IEEE uOttawa Student Branch, several organizers decided to create something even more ambitious. The idea was to form a new hackathon that would not only build on past successes but also set new standards in scale and quality.
In the fall of 2023, Hack the Hill was born out of a shared vision to organize a student-run hackathon that would exceed all expectations. The early days were filled with excitement and challenges as we worked to build a diverse team from various student groups. This collaboration was key to our growth, as we brought together passionate individuals who shared a common goal.
Hack the Hill I: A Major Milestone
By March 2023, Hack the Hill hosted its first hackathon, Hack the Hill I, which was a resounding success. With 611 attendees and $63,000 in total funding, we surpassed our own expectations. This event demonstrated our capability to organize a large-scale hackathon that not only brought together students from across Ottawa but also set a new benchmark for future events.
Securing sponsorships was a significant hurdle initially. However, our persistence paid off when we received support from prominent sponsors like Ciena, Canadian Tire, BlackBerry, and CSE. Their contributions, along with support from student organizations, were crucial in providing the resources needed for a successful event. We also developed a new event management software, Track the Hack, to enhance participant experience and operational efficiency.
Incorporation and Governance
Recognizing the need for legitimacy and effective governance, we decided to incorporate under the Canada Not-for-Profit Corporations Act in August 2023. This decision is driven by our desire to expand in scope and grow beyond uOttawa to become a city-wide independent organization with branches on multiple campuses. Our incorporation brings additional responsibilities but also unlocks numerous opportunities and benefits.
Establishing a formal structure allows us to define roles and responsibilities clearly, set policies and procedures, and create a robust governance framework. This structure provides a roadmap for our decision-making, risk management, and accountability, enabling us to navigate challenges and seize opportunities confidently. Effective governance empowers our strategic leadership, ensuring we stay true to our mission while being adaptable to changing circumstances. As part of this effort, we set out to prioritize adherence to proper bookkeeping practices, ensuring our resources are managed wisely and our financial statements reflect our true position. Transparency in our financial practices builds confidence among our stakeholders, including donors, sponsors, and participants.

Bringing our plans to life requires meticulous planning, coordination, and evaluation. We strive to create meaningful and impactful experiences through regular communication, opportunities for involvement, and recognition of contributions. Clear and consistent communication builds trust, keeping everyone informed and aligned with our goals. Volunteers are the backbone of Hack the Hill. Their dedication and enthusiasm drive our events and initiatives. Effective volunteer management creates a motivated and dedicated team essential for program success. Balancing Hack the Hill responsibilities with academic commitments requires time management, prioritization, and support systems. We encourage our members to grow outside Hack the Hill, prioritizing their personal and professional development.
